Although the resurgence of Halloween over the last couple of decades has been attributed to american culture, it has always been prevalent in this country over the last few hundred year. Allegedly women could find out who they would marry on this day by either putting nuts in a fire (if they jumped together the relationship would last or they could wave their hair across a mirror at midnight to see the face of their future husband). Apple bobbing has also been widely reported to take place on this day particularly in the north.

It can be argued that the main reason for it’s popularity is the move away from Guy Fawkes night; A day when we celebrate the failure of a Catholic radical plot to destroy parliament to prevent further persecution of their religion. However the church have denounced the celebration of Halloween due to the link to the dark side – however to hang draw and quarter the conspirators in the Gunpowder plot is seen as acceptable.
