Even Hestletine realises it’s time for a move away from an Oxbridge London state Parliament.

Yes, Tarzan, once seen as one of Thatcher’s henchmen has come out and stated that Local Councils should be given money to decide where it should be invested as they know the area the best.

You can look at this and see it as another attempt to dissolve responsibility from the Government, but anyone who remembers how local politics was in the 80’s should welcome this. When local councils had true power, policy making power, they were usually made up from local people and in return policy reflected that. Liverpool & Sheffield to name but two drove fear into Thatcher as they had become virtual mini independent socialist states – and we don’t have to really mention the GLC. Policies were put in place that were fair, moral and supported those who needed it – fuck the rich.

If there is ever going to be change this is how it needs to happen; an oxbridge etonian career politician won’t give a fuck about your area per-say, probably only tow the party line. Fuck Parliament, bring the true power that effects the majority of the people back to the area, where councillors live amongst you and cannot rent out a second home to their sisters cousin for a fortune.

If Parliament was ever representative of the country it certainly isn’t know – DeValera knew what sitting in a London Centric party meant, so did Gerry Adams and Scotland.

Zara Phillips and her fancy horsebox – Class Olympics all the way

As you hear about all the stories of potential olympians struggling to find sponsorship, Zara Phillips literally trundles along in a horsey/campervan worth an alleged 1/2 million pounds – it even has a granite worktop. It shouldn’t suprise me really as you don’t see the average working class person taking up equestrian events as a hobby. As my friend says it’s the horse that does all teh work so they should get the medal, unless he was calling Phillips a horse I’m not quite sure.

It will be quite interesting to see the class make up of all the medal winners – how many Etonian Oxbridge will win gold to those coming from your average state school. The opening ceremony showing the history of working britain so it could quite be ironic if all our medal winners are people with privelidged backgrounds.

class struggle, working class

Had an interesting conversation with Lou this morning about people’s attitude to being working class. When I went to University in the early 90’s being considered working class was deemed to be a stigma, students were desperate not to be classed working class. When my politics teacher asked us who considered themselves as working class, there was only me and another lad that put our hands up. “Bollocks” is what my lecturer said, and continued to expand that he knew other people came from a working class background but probably didn’t want to admit it in front of their peers, with the belief that being middle class was seen as aspirational. There was definately a lin between this and twelve years of Thatcherite conditioning. (It was the same lecturer who introduced me to Kropotkin and gave me copies of Class War).

When Lou went to Uni in the late 90’s, being working class had become aspirational, it was all the rage with the middle class kids. I’m sure the fact that Labour had just come to power had a feel good factor – if only everyone had realised Tony Blair would try and irradicate any identifying features that Labour still had with the working classes by immediately getting rid of clause 4.Marx did believe that a communist revolution would begin in England as we have a real identity with class

It has now got me wondering of society’s standing with being working class now the Tory scum are back in power. Is it still cool to be working class or is it a label and stigma that people want to move on from?

All the politician’s seen to recognise that capitalism in it’s current state isn’t working, and David Cameron has even announced it should be fairer……..but fairer for whom. His talk of cooperatives is of the right rhetoric but I don’t think he means that all the workers will equally share the business, capitalism will still dictate that workers will only get as little as possible (work 5 years and you to can have 5 shares worth £20), its not exactly going to change the world. Capitalism doesn’t work, it will eventually turn and devour even those who have attempted to nurture it; it’s nature in essence is not about fairness or equality.

China on the other hand have become one (if not the) most powerful country in the world, and have now bought 8% of the shares in Thames Water. Western Society has fought so avidly against any non capitalist society, but now the realisation is dawning that perhaps the west wasn’t so great after all.

When Russia broke up, many historians stated that history had finished (using the marxist analysis that history is purely about the history of class struggle), capitalism had won……………but wait who is that waiting in the wings!

Oh how we laughed when the rich were forced onto the streets!
