Yesterday ‘the i’ had an interview with Nick Clegg, and addresses people who don’t vote. I agree with him that there voting can be an important part of a process, if there is anything worth voting for – having three of the same thing is no real choice. The Liberals have also proven that voting is irrelevant as you can stand for one thing then do exactly the opposite once in power – Fuck your democracy Mr Clegg

I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I’d lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don’t talk about revolution
That’s going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I’m glad the commies were thrown out
of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
as long as they don’t move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can’t understand how their minds work
What’s the matter don’t they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I read New republic and Nation
I’ve learned to take every view
You know, I’ve memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I’m almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There’s no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I’ll send all the money you ask for
But don’t ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I’ve grown older and wiser
And that’s why I’m turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal

The forgotten and the ‘NEETS’ – New Labour & Tories have let down the youth.

I can’t believe there is actually a name for the youth that all the politicians forgot – NEETS (18 – 24 year olds not in Employment, Education or Training). No matter which way you turn avenues have been blocked -education is now only for those who can afford it or want a massive debt, little industry, no apprenticeships, increases in prices in cost of living, benefit cuts – it’s not easy or fun being young, let alone trying to establish yourself as an individual. Oh I forgot , you can always go and work for free it will give you experience. I think they call it an internship, and you should be grateful that you are allowed in the building.

Finish school after being told you can be all that you want to be only to be kicked in the bollocks and told to go and live with your family. What happens if you don’t have a family, or in an abusive family where do you go where do you turn. There are lots of people who want to train / work in order to establish themselves in society but what a society we live in. Just like Thatcher before, this country is no longer investing in the future, only this time it is not housing, industry but people.

The system needs to change, we are simply flogging a dead horse. All parties are merging into the same dross who don’t give a fuck apart from maintaining their position in the commons. It is the embodiment of self perpetuated privilege and power. Parliament now is more akin to Gladstone and Disraeli days, all pomp with no concern for the welfare of the lower classes except in the form of religious based charity.

What is the point of democracy when there is no real choice.

It is revealed that Royalty are frequently asked for consent on laws.

consent, democracy, republic, Royalty

Fuck me, no wonder we are screwed. I always believed that Royal Consent was one of those historic formalities that we all accepted because nobody believed that it really happened. Well it does. Under FOI it has been revealed that Royalty were consulted on changes to higher education, ID cards and paternity pay among other issues.

So all the talk of this country being a democracy, parliament for the people, is a fucking sham, Republic should now use this to further their campaign. The Tories are enough removed from reality in running the country let alone a bunch of parasitic leeches having to give their consent on policy.

democracy, house of lords, reform

Literally meaning “Who will guard the guards themselves?” but more commonly used “Who watches the watchmen?”

The Government are pressing ahead with the Lords reform to make it a more democratic body – but why? I don’t agree with having a body having legislative powers based on privelidge but another democratic elected body – really? Won’t this simple end up being an overspill from wanna be MP’s hailing from Eton or Oxbridge; Cameron and Clegg appear to be trying to make a fairer legislative system but fairer to whom.

The ‘new’ House of Lords should be filled in a similar fashion to jury system; a chamber full of average people, a cross section of society; if it is to be representative of the people then thats exactly what it should be, not just an avenue for individuals to progress in a self perpetuating industry.

Who would like a go in the house of Lords?

Nick Clegg has drawn a line in the sand and stated that the Libs will push through changes to the house of Lords to ensure that it reflects the democratic process of the commons. He has said:

Lloyd George described the Lords as being a ‘body of five hundred men chosen at random from amongst the unemployed’. To be honest it might be better if it was.”

What a fuckin great statement. With the house of commons being full of etonian oxbridge, it would be great if those who want to work (it is impossible to sustain 100% employment) but can’t get a job they could sit in the Lords – see it as jury type service. Although lords don’t receive a salary (as most of them are fucking rich and senile anyway) they may claim a daily allowance of £300 (or may elect to claim a reduced daily allowance of £150) per sitting day – but only if they attend a sitting of the House and/or committee proceedings. Also Members of the Lords do not pay tax on their allowances – this would be a great supplemental income.

Break the monopoly of privelidge and allow the country to be run by the country!

Unfortunately, before I get tooo excited with this thought, I’m certain Cameron will simply slap Clegg down and tell to stop being so silly.

If you want a truly democtratic country allow Mr or Mrs citizen to take their turn to keep the commons in check!
