The evolvement of the Bank of Ideas

So the Occupy lot have reclaimed a disused building from UBS and it is really refreshing to see a disused building being put to good use. Surely Cameron should be commending them for putting his ‘Big Society’ into practice! Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with the generalisation and vagueness of the occupy movement (most sensible people had despised capitalism for decades), I do admire that they are actually doing something practical that may make a difference to the community around them.

The Bank of Ideas is situated on Sun Street, Hackney in an abandoned office block purchased several years ago by the bank UBS. It is an enormous space complete with a 500-seater lecture hall.

It has been opened to the public for the non-monetary trade of ideas to help solve the pressing economic, social and environmental problems of our time.

There is also room for community groups, youth clubs, nurseries and other public services that have lost their space due to Government spending cuts.

Artists, performers and creatives are welcome to come entertain and to help transform the space. We also encourage games, workshops and skillshares on anything from yoga to yahtzee.

The only prerequisite is that this space is not for financial transactions. Trade in ideas or skills, but no one should need to pay to take part in the Bank’s activities.

Everyone should feel safe and welcome in the Bank.  Our Safer Spaces Policy asks people to be mindful and respectful of how their ideas or actions might effect others, and there is a No Drugs and Alcohol Policy. As this is a public space any damage or disrespect to the property would be an act of disrespect and violence towards your own community, a community trying to come together to find positive solutions to our current crises. We ask all people who come into the space to come in with respect.

Everyone is warmly welcome and encouraged to come and be part of creating the Bank of Ideas. Email us with your ideas, suggestions and requests at bankofideaslondon@gmail.com.

There are many organisations that have existed for years purely to support the community but one of the major issues is always funding . Why can’t more disused buildings be simply given to the local community groups in order to allow them to develop and grow.

Capitalism is not going to be destoyed because a few tents cause inconvenience but it’s great watching all those feathers get rustled. Good luck to one and all in the Occupy movement and hope you don’t meet the same treatment as those in Wall Street.

freedom attacked, Nov 9 demo, occupy oakland, occupy st pauls, occupy wall street

Oakland felt the backlash for speaking out, now Wall street is feeling the same, but the question remains as to what Cameron is going to do with the St Paul’s lot. Knowing how detrimental the Tories find a little thing called ‘rights’ when running the country, and coupled with some of the proposals they want to go through, I do worry for their safety.

1. Cameron has suggested to the CBI proposals to make it easier to sack people. With union members being blacklisted in certain industries, perhaps this will now cover protesting – for making life inconveneint for the ruling classes.

2. Talk of surface to air missiles being available during the olympics (terrorist attacks) – what is the state’s understanding of a terrorist (someone who doesn’t agree with the ruling classes?) – will they launch an armed assault against the 1%.

3. Total policing in full effect as seen at the recent demonstrations on November 9th, it won’t be long before bullying tatics are going to be employed. Total policing – no tolerance for any criticism of the ruling classes?

The right to anonymity will soon become a freedom long forgotten – how long before the idea of identity cards is pushed again – is the whole Theresa May thing simple disinformation to get the public backing for such a drastic attack on civil liberties.

Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable has stated today:

I have sympathy with the emotions that lie behind it. Some of their recommendations arent terribly helpful, but thats not the point. I think it does reflect a feeling that a small number of people have done extraordinarily well in the crisis, often undeservedly, and large numbers of other people whove played no part in causing the crisis have been hurt by it. So thats the source of the injustice.

He has vowed to tackle the greed of executives and their pay – even Ed ‘nostradamus’ Milliband has issued a warning that the St Paul’s protest should act as a warning and ignored at one’s peril (that quite Sodom and Gomorrah stuff from Ed).

However our beloved leader David Cameron has done nothing but belittle the protest and it’s activists:

The idea of establishing tents in the middle of our city, I don’t feel is particularly constructive……….protesting is something you, on the whole, should do on two feet, rather than lying down – in some cases in a fairly comatose state.

Obviously Mr Cameron has read the rule book on protesting and feels that the occupy lot are cheating – somewhat ironic from a Government whose main perpetrators personal fortune has probably been made by cheating ordinary folk.

666, 9 november, ed milliband, november 30 strike, occupy st pauls, shit

Both Shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander, and Leader of the opposition Ed Milliband have spoken today about the significance of the occupy movement at St Paul’s. No scatological demonology rhetoric was used (bloody anarchists they get everywhere!) but they both spoke of:

a much deeper unease in society about the rules by which society is being run

Rules are usually designed to ensure that anyone participating has an equal chance / opportunity until greed outweighs any form of justice. “Because I can……..because I want” is a dangerous ethos for anyone to rule by. With the demo on the 9th November and the proposed strike for 30th November will see the public converge to display their anger.
