So “London Calling” is going to be the theme for the Olympics. Good, the song still recenates what is prevalent in todays society. Origianlly the song’s lyrics included the themes of:
- nuclear core reactor meltdown (origianlly about Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania), now see Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster
- rising unemployment, no jobs for the youth of today
- racial conflict, English Defence League links with Anders Behren Breivik, and there proposed march into multicultural Tower Hamlets
- drug use in Britain, police admit losing the war on drugs
I think Joe Strummer would be proud that his song is being used as it still stands true today as it did when first released. However I don’t think it’s what the Olympic Committee had in mind.
