David Starkey has surely ruined his career by putting forward his ‘alternate’ view to the recent civil unrest. On Newsnight he attempted to give creedance to Enoch Powell’s famous ‘river’s of blood’ speech, by stating the river was now Tottenham, Clapham & Croydon. He blames the rise of black culture as the reason for the trouble, as white people are now entwined within this culture.
What a load of bollocks. All the other guests were left flabbergasted as the honorary Cambridge Professor, once renowned historian self destructed on television. The only person who has given any support to his reasoning is Nick Griffin, which speaks volumes.
However no matter how unpalatable Mr Starkey views are, no matter how ludicrous we should not prevent people from airing their abhorrent views. In the public forum, racist extremist views can be debated and dismissed even seen as laughable but once they are kept in the dark, they fester, exploiting people’s fears without revealing the full hatred behind their views.
