Further to my previous post, and after reading through today’s edition of ‘The i’, I wonder just what is around the corner. The Government’s response to the recent riots is to use ‘the full force of the law’ and blame social media sites for inciting violence, but the problems for the youth are just beginning –
- More than 20 % of 16 to 24 yr olds are unemployed
- Over 200,000 students will not get a university place
- Those who do go to university will come out with 26k+ debt, potentially rising to 58k+ once the new course charging structure comes in.
There is no acknowledgement by the Government that people are pissed off and our younger generation are bearing the brunt of it. The recession was the fault of the greed of the world’s bankers, no social economic policy could have prevented it, but the Tories are causing more pain than necessary. A quote I think sums up the precarious situation we are in is from a recent interview with Tom Morello (guitarist with Rage Against the Machine and opponent to censorship).
As long as the profit motive continues to be the political priority, the gap between the rich and poor is going to grow, as will the unrest.
