To be kind….

….Viva l’anarchie

Fray Bentos and the shattered illusion of my youth.

When I was a kid we always used to have one or two weeks on holiday at the start of July, shutdown weeks, as my Dad was a toolmaker. For those not used to engineering work, staff don’t really have leave, a two week shutdown in the Summer, a week at Christmas, and then five floating days throughout the year. One week at Great Yarmouth (or nearby Caister) and if they could afford another week, a different holiday camp. Me, Mum & Dad, my Nan & Grandad and the dog, would all bundle in Grandad’s car for our annual excursion in a caravan or chalet; what photo opportunities would I have this time (see Holiday Camp post)

One of the memories I have is the lovely meal, saved for the holiday, of a Fray Bentos pie, tinned potatoes and tinned peas; all this to feed 4 adults and 1 child, I did think my Grandad was God like but my parents always disagreed. I later found out my Mum & Dad used to nip out for a bag of chips after because they were starving – so much for the miracle.  I used to love this meal and thought it was a real treat until yesterday.

As my family have gone to Peppa Pig World (just the thought has me rocking and breaking out into a nervous sweat), I thought I would grab something simple from the corner shop, and there to my amazement just by the canned hot dogs was a Fray Bentos Pie. Should I……………..I know trying to recreate the past is never a good thing but I couldn’t resist it. A Fray Bentos pie just for me.
