Reclaim the High Street before it’s too late.

There was an interesting investigation on Radio 5 last night about the ‘scam’ of landlords letting charities occupy their empty shops as the landlord will then get reduced business rated from the council. The investigation was based around that many of these charities never actually open, having just a poster in the window or actually give stuff away. My take on teh whole investigation is – well at least shops are being used.

South Norwood and Portland Road is a typical example of how the high street is suffering; decades ago it used to have all some of the main high street shops but now many units remain empty. I think it would be a good incentive for the council to offer a massive reduction  in business rates (to the point of withdrawing them) for any landlord that will allow their shop to be used for any community projects. Getting the community back into the high street may then have a knock on effect to the business of others. With another recession looming it would be an ideal opportunity to encourage an uptake of empty premises.

If something isn’t done soon all the local high streets will soon become long forgotten, with the industrial park becomming king.
