Last night I went and saw The Phantom of the Opera at Minster Church, Croydon; there was no 3D or digital sound, but simply the original grainy black and white film but accompanied by an improvised performance on the church organ. What a joy to behold. The organist explained that this was the 248th time he had improvised to the film, and each time he tries to do it differently, focussing on various themes within the film.

I had never seen this classic silent masterpiece and it may me think about the whole context of communication within a political context. There is more than one way to skin a cat – the phrase goes, and hence there is more than one way to achieve what you set out to do. Whether you use confrontation, appeasement, consolidation or compromise it is still possible to get to the position you want, but the results may not necessarily be the same. Just like the soundtrack to the film, dependant on the overlying tone of the music can make the film be jovial or sinister, similiar to the discourse used by any protanganist.

The 99% are working within the boundaries of the law, very commendable some might say, but can this be viewed as appeasement and apart from the initial headlines will their protest actually make any difference to corporate greed. Now if everybody withdraw all their money from the bank at the same time – would they take note? 

One thing I do know is that Minster church is fucking cold, and pews are not comfortable after 20 mins.
