Last night Dr Dee was fantastic, the music, the production – it was just excellent………………..apart from Mr Damon Albarn. Perched on the edge of the moving platform where a lot of the musicians sat, his vocals cut in and out of what was an otherwise excellent modern opera.

Was he there for ego…i don’t think so………….was he there for his operatic ability……………..no…………….was he there simply to attract an audience that may otherwise not be interested in going to the ENO…………could be.

The audience was a mixture of hardcore opera lovers and ENO supporters, middle aged indie kids to catch a glimpse of the once brit pop king and people like me who just want to see something that potentially breaks traditional boundaries and concepts.

I was really excited that Tony Allen was part of the band, but disappointed that his talents weren’t really on display. At least Albarn isn’t quaffing champagne with Alex James, Keith Allen, Damien Hirst, David Cameron at an organic horse breeding pig fucking cheese farm etc. and is constantly reinventing himself as a musician and not a high brow socialite. For that he has my respect.
