The reference is to my son Nye and Nye Bevin, after whom he was named.
In the years leading up to 2008 hundreds of people died at Stafford Hospital amid “appalling” levels of care, and my Grandad, John ‘Jack’ Cooper, was one of them. He told me and my Dad that the level of care was appalling and the nurses were evil; but he could be a cantancarous, arrogant old sod (a bit like me) and we assumed that like everything else, it was just him.
I miss him dearly.
Sorry about your grandad and the evils he must have suffered. I hope there will be prison sentences for these criminals. There is information that the problem is more widespread. Mother-in-law was done in on the Liverpool Pathway just before Christmas. We implored them to help feed her but they put her on the Pathway against our wishes and starved her to death in a week. She had fought in the war and was a mate of the woman they made the film about called Carve her name with Pride. Just someone who fought against Nazis. At least we got them to play Glenn Miller to her whilst they finished her off. I don’t know if you are involved in medicine, but all the ethics committees talk costs and benefits and Qaly’s. At conferences managers of NHS Trusts and the private sector share the same agenda -and talk of cost containment and customer satisfaction – keeping the smile on the nurses face. Something needs to be done. Nye must be turning in his grave.
No I’m not involved in medicine but have always been proud of our health service, hence calling our son Nye. I am sorry to hear about your mother-in-law and even sorrier that Stafford isn’t the only’Trust’ (how ironic) that poor quality practices are hitting. Some services are not about profit and it has to be accepted that care is not a commodity that can be quantified economically.
