Jorge Mario Bergoglio now Pope Francis I, no wonder he was a majority vote as he ticks all the boxes. Opposed to abortion, euthanasia, and homosexuality, actually opposing legislation for same sex marriage calling it the devil’s work.
Whilst those issues on human rights are bad enough he has been accused of supporting the Argentine Dictatorship in giving them cover to persecute political prisoners – hiding them in his holiday home until the Inter-American Human Rights Commission had left.
Just as people should have the freedom of religion (although I think it’s stupid), religion should allow other people to have freedom as well.
Well, at least he can’t legislate on his moral religious beliefs. I am no supporter of Popes, Presidents and Prime Ministers, but I question whether abortion and euthanasia should be rights unless there are alternative rights to life. Me, I am steadfastly pro-life and pro-choice, and as an anarchist I do not accept that a certain authoritarian strand of feminism should have the last word on abortion. Its a lesser evil, for most women, not a morally attractive option. And so far, the pro-choice argument has not advanced since the 1960s. Basically, it sucks. And as a non theist I argue – you can read my textbooks on midwifery and medical ethics – being pro-choice does not have to negate a pro-life position. If the old Pope can popularise this view he would have my support. He might start by emphasising the morality of pro life views from the legality of pro choice. Why are anarchists, and indeed the left, so scared of confronting this topic?
