People are fed up with greed and privilege. Decisions being made by the state that are nothing to do the needs of the people just purely for business reasons. The Olympics in London proved it was nothing to do with the local economy, purely to brag on the world stage, when people in the east end are struggling with poverty.
Just because we make an area look pretty with flashing lights, art and buildings – it doesn’t solve any of the issues that exist.
Politics has simply become a career for the privilege, no longer will workers or respected people of the community ever get a voice, only those who play the politics game.
The average person in the world knows that a change is needed urgently – capitalism taints democracy and democracy doesn’t work when all the choices you are given actually relat to the same thing.
I have worked in Brasil, in Sao Paulo, where the only movement protecting and advancing the interests of working class people was the US intelligence services, who insisted on places for working class kids in higher education and attempted to clean up the scandals where politicians had stolen funds for hospital building. Next to my hotel was an unfinished woman’s hospital from which a politician had stolen the $44 million to complete the project. I saw the effects of the illegal trade in organs – children kidnapped and cut open for their of organs. I saw the eco- friendly homes of rich western celebrities looked after by poverty stricken people from the hillsides outside of Sao Paulo. In the front of the battle against corruption was the US intelligence services, not because they loved the poor but because they wished to protect Sao Paulo as the financial centre of South America. The current protests will consist of a mixture of middleclasses, the labouring poor, and residual support from the US intelligence people, who have been largely removed from operational activities in the region.
