Jesus & Mo – Censorship is just wrong!

J&MCensorship of the arts is never right, and just creates more offence than censorship of the original offence was meant to resolve. Whether it is PMRC trying to restrict and ban music in the 90’s or the recent debate about the religious satire ‘Jesus & Mo”.

The cartoon was even censored by Channel 4 and the BBC – if religion is so wonderful surely it should just be able to turn the other cheek, and feel comfortable in their own faith rather than attacking others ‘non belief’. If you are a non believer, the fact that people do whatever the church tells them based on a story that relies on ‘blind faith’ and fear of a hell to self perpetuate the myth. To me, the fact that most wars are caused by different religious factors, willing to kill in the name of their supposed god (what a horrible concept that a so called god is happy for other people to kill in order to prove their faith). The most fucked up people I have ever met in this life are ones that have had catholicism forced upon them – completely screws them up!

The fact that religions can be so dogmatic, trying to cover up the contradictions within their doctrine (does the vatican encourage abuse by its inability), but they can’t take a open view of satire that hasn’t been designed to offend there narcissistic tendencies, but to amuse those who just try and lead a good life.

Record Companies are killing music not Piracy.

So Manchester is the city with the greatest downloads, and Ed Sheeran’s album has the largest downloads (why!). Torrent sites are here to stay regrdless of the industry’s desire to dissolve them – you can’t undo technology; the best way forward is to work with it.

Over the last 20 years there has been such a monopoly by the major record companies that only perceived commercial successes are ever realised. Nick Drake was a commercieal failure when he was alive but his contribution music cannot be questioned – he would not get a record deal these days.

Most artists have realised that the best way of earning money is to go on the road. Concerts, merchandise at the gigs are the best ways for the artist to make money.

I download lots of things and will always buy what I like, and I will always but from small independent labels. If a musician is that good / popular they can afford to give away their music, simply asking for donations. Amanda Palmers’ kickstarter campaign is the leading light in how artists should reinvent their career, cutting out the greed of corporations.

The music giants says there is less money going into producing artists, but if it means the end to manufactured ‘X Factor’ pop then good. All the artists that bands reference as influences on their career would never have beeb released in today’s market, new styles of music are being oppressed through the desire of moguls trying to make more money.

All the music Industry should stand up for Pussy Riot

Music has always been used as a form of expression and a political voice, from Woody Guthrie to Nina Simone to Crass and now Pussy Riot. The difference is Pussy Riot are still in a Russian jail for inciting religious hatred. This is a spurious charge due to the powers that be not liking what they had to say. In a recent concert Madonna has said:

I know there are many sides to every story, and I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think that these three girls – Masha, Katya, Nadya – I think that they have done something courageous.

Athony Kledis form Red Hot Chili Peppers has been seen sporting a ‘Free Pussy Riot’ T – Shirt and Yoko Ono has tweeted:

Mr Putin you are a wise man & dont need to fight with musicians & their friends

Freedom of expression and speech are a fundamental right in the free world and any attack on this should be fought by everybody – if you stand by and watch who speak out when they come for you!

I propose Stephen ‘Naked Rambler’ Gough should light the Olympic Flame

As Stephen Gough finally celebrates his freedom after 2 years banged up for the crime of being naked, I put forward that the Olympic Commitee should elect him to light the Olympic flame. He has walked the breadth of the country, as naked as the flame in the Olympic torch, so is an ideal candidate to actually light the Olympic flame and start off the games.

The BBC should back this campaign as I’m sure there is a good documentary in it, the bloke hasn’t seen his kids or his mum in years due to society’s prudishness, we can at least say sorry by allowing him this honour. Why should someone standing by his beliefs that are not physically harming or discriminating against people be locked up. It is completely outlandish that he has been warned that he will spend the rest of his life in jail if he doesn’t conform.

Stephen Gough, for all those without clothing, I salute you.

Murdoch quashed NOTW ‘scoop’ on Arthur C Clarke

censorship, murdoch, press

It’s every reporters dream, a sensational story uncovered about Arthur C Clarke alleging he was a paedophile. However as Clarke was a close friend of Murdoch’s he refused to publish the story.

The press have always claimed that they break stories as they are in the public interest, but if this was true EVERY story would be published. I have always heard stories from friends of friends in the media about stories that are not published for whatever reason (Steven Gerrard, Kevin Keegan, Gary Glitter).

Freedom of the press simply related to the freedom for them to publish what they perceive will sell papers. It’s all about the money money money……..as Jessie J would say.
